A staycation is not a small holiday. It is a different thing entirely, and the people who are disappointed by one usually booked it as though it were a short version of a trip.

A holiday is about where you go. A staycation is about not going anywhere: you leave after work, you are there within two hours, nobody unpacks properly, and the entire value is in the twenty four hours of not being at home with the dishes. Judged as a holiday it is thin. Judged as a staycation, the right property an hour outside Kolkata on a Friday evening is the best money a tired family spends all year.

This page lists 40 places to do that from Kolkata, from a villa 12 km away at Ruby Crossing to a floating resort two hours out at Minakhan. 19 of them have a pool. 14 are marked child friendly, 8 take pets, and 17 have wifi good enough to work from, which matters more than it used to.

It also covers the thing that actually ruins Kolkata staycations, which is not the property. It is the hour you leave the house.

The traffic window, which decides everything

A property 40 km away is an hour on a Sunday morning and two and a half hours at six on a Friday evening. That gap is the single biggest variable in this entire page, and no booking site mentions it.

Going south, towards Raichak, Falta, Budge Budge and Diamond Harbour. Diamond Harbour Road is slow through Behala and Thakurpukur from about five in the evening. Either leave before four, or leave after half past eight when it thins out.

Going east, towards Ghatakpukur, Bantala and the Basanti road. The Bypass and the Basanti Highway are the quickest exit the city has, which is why this direction is the most forgiving for a Friday evening start. Still avoid five to seven if you can.

Going north or across the river, towards Bandel, Singur, Deulti, Garchumuk and Howrah. Everything depends on which bridge. The second Hooghly bridge after six is unpleasant. Leaving by three, or after nine, is the trick.

The rule that works. For a Friday night arrival, pick something inside 40 km or leave before four. For a Saturday morning start, anything within two hours is comfortable. For a Sunday return, leave by eleven or after four, because the city fills up from the afternoon.

One more thing nobody says. The drive back is the part that spoils staycations. A two hour drive each way for a single night means four hours in a car for twenty hours of rest. Under an hour each way is a different experience, which is why the first group below is worth more than it looks.

Under 30 minutes: the real staycation

Close enough that you can go after work on a weekday, which is the test.

Farm House Villa near Ruby Crossing, 12 km, is the closest thing we list. Air conditioned, child friendly, couple friendly, housekeeping, parking. A farmhouse inside the city’s own edge, which is exactly the oddity people want for a birthday or a quiet night out of the flat.

Newtown Resort, about 9 km from the eastern edge, has air conditioning, games, wifi, power backup and is child friendly. The easiest possible version of this: twenty minutes from a Salt Lake or New Town flat.

Bantala Farm House sits inside Kolkata limits on the Basanti road side, with a bonfire, power backup and a doctor listed. This is the one people book for birthdays, shoots and small parties, because you are not driving anywhere and the place is yours.

Golui, Bally Ganga View Apartment, 14 km, gives you the Ganga from the window beside the Bally bridge, with air conditioning, wifi and parking. For anyone who grew up by the river, an evening watching it is the whole holiday.

30 to 60 minutes: out of the city, back by lunch

The sweet spot. Far enough that the city is gone, close enough that the drive does not eat the weekend.

Easy Escape Within an Hour, 20 km, has a pool, barbecue, fishing, pickup, housekeeping and conference facilities, and is child friendly. The conference line matters: this is the one we send office offsites to, because a day of meetings plus an evening by the pool is a different thing from a day in a hotel ballroom.

Nomadic Jungle Tent Kolkata, 25 km, is tents rather than rooms, with a bonfire, barbecue, wifi, power backup, and child friendly. Children remember this one for years. Adults who need a proper mattress should read the description twice.

Lingdum Forest Retreat, about 16 km out on the city’s eastern side, has a pool, bonfire, barbecue, wifi and room service. Green, close, and better equipped than most places at this distance.

The Breathing Earth, 29 km towards Diamond Harbour, has a pool, restaurant, room service and wifi. The most hotel-like property in this band, for people who want service rather than a bonfire.

Ramnagar River View Retreat, 14 km on the Falta side, has a pool, restaurant, laundry, room service and a doctor on call. The shortest drive to a river view with facilities.

Private Pool Villa, Laxmanpur is an hour out, booked whole, with its own pool. This is the single most requested shape of staycation we get: a villa, a private pool, nobody else on the property.

One to two hours: the full weekend version

Raichak, 50 to 60 km down the eastern bank of the Hooghly, has more whole-property options than anywhere else near Kolkata. The Ganges Villa Phase I with a pool and games, Phase II with a bonfire and power backup, the air conditioned Private Villa and AC Villa, the French Cottage Bungalow with a pool and barbecue, the quieter Garden Bungalow, and Group Hotel Booking in Raichak which is set up for seven to ten people with wifi.

The appeal of Raichak is the river, which is several kilometres wide here, with the Kukrahati ferry crossing it and ships at anchor. Our riverside guide covers the tide and which bank gets the sunset.

The Basanti road, east of the city, is the fastest exit from Kolkata and therefore the most Friday-evening friendly direction.

Ghatakpukur Villa, 34 km, is booked whole with its own private pool, a barbecue, child friendly, couple friendly, and it takes pets. For a group of eight to ten this is the one we suggest first. Ghatakpukur Eco Resort is the rooms-rather-than-villa version, with wifi, power backup, couple friendly and pet friendly. Banobithi Eco Resort, 33 km, has a pool and is child friendly, and is the value option on this road.

Bawali, 35 km south, is the closest thing to countryside the city has. Bawali Bungalow has fishing and takes pets, and Bawali Farmhouse is air conditioned with a barbecue, power backup and pets allowed.

Sundargram, 35 km in North 24 Parganas, is the eco-village option with air conditioning, room service and a doctor listed, and it suits families and birders.

The river belt, 40 to 60 km, is where the facilities are. River Side Resort at 40 km with a pool, bonfire and wifi. Burul Bari at 41 km with a pool and all meals. Burul Riverside Resort at 44 km with a pool, restaurant and bar. Diamond Resort at 48 km, the best equipped of the lot, pets allowed. River View Resort Falta at 50 km with boating and a playground. Shyamsundarpur at 50 km, quieter, bonfire, pets. Budget Riverfront Falta at 57 km for larger groups, with fishing. Ganga View Homestay at Belari at 57 km, where every room faces the river and there is a pool. Garchumuk Villa at 60 km, booked whole at the Damodar confluence, child friendly, pets allowed.

North and across the river, a different set of roads and fewer crowds.

Singur Resort, 37 km and about an hour and a half, has a pool, wifi and air conditioning. Purushottambati Eco Resort at Bandel has a pool, a library, games and wifi, and is the greenest of the northern options, with the Bandel church and the Hooghly nearby. Mellock Evergreen Resort at Deulti is about an hour and a half out in Sarat Chandra country. Green View Resort, Mellock, 70 km, has a pool, games and room service.

Minakhan Floating Resort, about two hours east, is the most comfortable property in that direction: pool, fishing, games, wifi, power backup. BahirKunja River Bungalow is a bungalow on the water with a pool and power backup, child friendly. Baor Lake View Resort near Gobardanga sits on an oxbow lake, with a barbecue, child friendly. Debanandapur Village Resort is rural Hooghly, air conditioned, pets allowed, with pickup available.

Pick by what the weekend is for

Forty is too many to choose from cold, so choose by purpose.

A couple, one night, no driving. Farm House Villa at Ruby, Golui at Bally, The Breathing Earth, or Ghatakpukur Eco Resort, which is marked couple friendly.

A family with small children. Newtown Resort, Banobithi, River View Resort Falta for the playground and boating, Nomadic Jungle Tent for the tents, or Ganga View at Belari for the pool and cycling.

A group of eight to twelve taking the whole place. Ghatakpukur Villa, Garchumuk Villa, The Ganges Villa Raichak, Group Hotel Booking Raichak, Bawali Farmhouse. Above about ten people, a whole property is usually cheaper per head than rooms anyway.

A pool, non negotiable. Nineteen of these have one: Lingdum, Easy Escape, The Breathing Earth, Ramnagar, Ganges Villa Raichak, Banobithi, Ghatakpukur Villa, Singur, River Side Resort, Burul Bari, Burul Riverside, Diamond Resort, River View Falta, French Cottage, Ganga View Belari, Green View Mellock, Purushottambati, Minakhan and BahirKunja. Our pool villa guide separates private pools from shared ones.

Working from somewhere else for two days. Wifi and power backup are the two things to check, and seventeen of these have wifi: Newtown, Golui, Lingdum, Easy Escape, Jungle Tent, Breathing Earth, Private Villa Raichak, Ghatakpukur Villa, Ghatakpukur Eco, Singur, River Side Resort, Burul Riverside, Diamond Resort, AC Villa Raichak, Group Booking Raichak, Purushottambati and Minakhan. Ask us to confirm the speed before you commit to a work call, because “wifi” in a village property can mean one bar of mobile data shared by everyone.

An office offsite. Easy Escape lists conference facilities, and the whole-property options at Raichak and Ghatakpukur work for a team of ten to fifteen who want to talk in the morning and swim in the afternoon.

A birthday, a shoot or a party. Bantala Farm House and Farm House Villa at Ruby are inside or beside the city, which is what makes them work for an evening event. Ask us about music hours and guest numbers before you plan anything, because most properties have limits and the ones that do not are usually the ones with unhappy neighbours.

With a dog. Eight here take pets: Ghatakpukur Villa, Ghatakpukur Eco Resort, Bawali Bungalow, Bawali Farmhouse, Diamond Resort, Shyamsundarpur, Garchumuk Villa and Debanandapur. The pet friendly guide covers the rules each one actually applies.

Elderly parents. Short drive, air conditioning, a doctor listed, and a level walk from the car. Newtown Resort, The Breathing Earth, Ramnagar and Golui at Bally fit the first three. For the fourth, ask us and we will check with the property rather than guess.

The questions worth asking before you pay

The difference between a good staycation and a wasted Saturday is almost always one of these.

Is the pool actually open? Pools at smaller properties get drained for cleaning, and some close in the winter months. Ask for the dates.

Is there a generator, and does it run the air conditioning? Power cuts in these districts are ordinary. Many places have backup for lights and fans only. In May that difference is the whole trip.

What are the meal timings, and is food included? Most properties outside the city serve set meals at set times. There is rarely anywhere else to eat. Tell them in advance about vegetarians, allergies and children.

Can we bring our own alcohol? Some allow it, some charge corkage, some do not permit it at all. Worth settling before the car is loaded.

What time is check in and check out? For a single night, a noon checkout versus a ten o’clock one is a quarter of your stay.

Is the property fenced, and is there water on the premises? With small children, both matter.

How far is the room from where the car stops? Village properties vary, and listings describe this carelessly. We ask the property instead of guessing.

Mosquitoes and nets. Between July and October, by any water, this is not a small question.

When to go

October to February is the season, and December and January weekends near Kolkata are booked out well in advance. If you want New Year, ask in October, not December.

March is pleasant, and the last comfortable month for sitting outside all day.

April to early June needs air conditioning and a pool, and an early morning or late evening drive. The middle of the day is for indoors.

Monsoon, late June to September, is genuinely good for a staycation and badly undersold. Everything is green, rates ease, the river is full, and sitting under a roof watching rain over fields with khichuri and ilish is a specific Bengali pleasure that no beach holiday replaces. Carry repellent and accept that the pool may be a washout.

Puja is its own thing. Many people leave the city precisely to escape the crowds, so properties near Kolkata fill up fast for those ten days, often months ahead.

Day staycation, which is cheaper and underrated

Several of these take day guests: arrive around nine, breakfast, lunch, pool, tea, leave by five or six. No night, no packing, and for a family of four it costs a fraction of an overnight.

The practical ones are the closer properties with pools: Easy Escape, Banobithi, Burul Bari, River Side Resort, Diamond Resort, Ramnagar, Ghatakpukur Villa and Garchumuk. Our day outing guide explains how day pricing works, which is usually per head with food, and what a group should ask for.

For a large family group, a day outing at a whole property is the single best value trip on this entire site.

What a staycation near Kolkata is not

Honesty prevents disappointment.

It is not a hill station. These are flat, warm districts. The scenery is rivers, paddy, ponds and trees, and that is enough for a night, not a week.

It is not a luxury hotel, unless you book one. Most of these are family run properties with a few rooms, a cook, and a caretaker. Service is willing rather than slick.

It is not quiet everywhere. Weekend groups, music, and the occasional wedding next door happen. If quiet is the point, say so when you book and we will steer you towards the properties that enforce it.

It is not a restaurant. You eat what the kitchen cooks, at the time they cook it, which is usually very good and never a menu.

It is not a beach. The river is not for swimming. That is what the pool is for.

Three plans that work, by the clock

The Friday night escape. Leave by four, arrive before dark, bonfire and dinner, late start on Saturday, breakfast by the pool, leave after lunch. Best at anything inside 40 km, because you are buying an evening and a morning rather than a day. Ghatakpukur, Bawali, Lingdum, Easy Escape and the Ruby villa all fit.

The full Saturday to Sunday. Leave at seven on Saturday morning, be there for breakfast, a whole day at the property, and drive back after a late Sunday breakfast. This is the one that justifies 50 to 70 km, which means Raichak, Falta, Burul, Diamond Harbour, Garchumuk or Bandel.

The Sunday day out. Leave at seven, arrive by nine, breakfast, pool, lunch, tea, home by seven. No packing, no night, and for a family of four it is the cheapest version of all of this. Burul Bari, Easy Escape, Banobithi, River Side Resort and Diamond Resort all do day guests properly.

A fourth, for the brave: the weekday staycation. Monday to Thursday, these properties are half empty, quieter, and more flexible about everything. If your work allows it, this is the best version of the whole idea.

Going without a car

Most people drive, and you do not have to.

Trains that work. Sealdah to Diamond Harbour takes a little over an hour, with the river close to the station. Sealdah to Taki Road, about three hours, for the Ichamati side. Howrah to Bandel, under an hour, for the Purushottambati and Bandel church side. Howrah to Singur or Deulti on the Kharagpur line. Sealdah to Gobardanga for the Baor lake side. For most of these, a short auto or toto ride covers the last stretch, and the property can usually arrange a pickup from the station.

App cabs. Fine for getting out of the city, unreliable for getting back. Beyond about 40 km you will not find a return cab at eleven on a Sunday morning in a village. If you go by app cab, arrange the return with the property the day before.

Reserved car. For a group, a car for the whole trip including waiting is usually cheaper per head than two one-way cabs, and it means the vehicle is there when somebody wants to go to the market or the river. Ask us to arrange it and the driver knows the property, which matters on the last three kilometres of village road.

Parking. Most properties have it, and a few in the city edge do not. Worth asking if you are driving something large.

How the pricing actually works

We do not publish per-property rates on these pages, because they change with the season, the day of the week and the size of the group, and a stale number helps nobody. What is worth understanding is the shape of the pricing, because it decides which property is right for you.

Per room, per night. The commonest at resorts. Meals are sometimes included and sometimes charged separately, which changes the real cost significantly for a family.

Per head, with all meals. The commonest at homestays and smaller eco resorts. Simple, predictable, and usually the best value for two or three people.

Whole property, one rate. Villas and farmhouses. The number looks large until you divide it by ten, at which point it is almost always the cheapest way for a group, and it comes with the one thing groups actually want, which is nobody else being there.

Day outing, per head. Arrival around nine, two or three meals, departure by evening. Pool access is sometimes included and sometimes extra.

Things that are extra more often than people expect. The driver’s food and accommodation, extra mattresses, a barbecue or bonfire arrangement, pool access at a few places, and anything brought in from outside. Ask about all five when you book and there are no surprises at checkout.

Weekends cost more than weekdays, and the December to January and Puja periods cost more than everything else. A Tuesday in August and a Saturday in December at the same property are different products.

Worth seeing, by direction

The property is the point, and if you want an hour out of it, here is what is nearby.

South, the Raichak and Diamond Harbour road. The Kukrahati ferry from Raichak, the old river fort, Fort Mornington’s ruins at Diamond Harbour, and the fish market, which is the best thing in that town in hilsa season.

South west, Bawali. The restored Bawali Rajbari and the village around it, which is as close to old Bengal as you will get inside an hour of the city.

West, Garchumuk and Howrah. The deer park at Garchumuk, the Damodar and Hooghly confluence, and Gadiara further on where the Rupnarayan joins.

North, Bandel and Chandannagar. The Bandel church, which is among the oldest in Bengal, the Hooghly imambara, and Chandannagar’s riverfront strand, which is the prettiest evening walk in this entire guide.

North west, Deulti. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s house at Samtaber, which costs almost nothing to visit and is the sort of place that stays with you.

East, the Basanti road. Not sightseeing country, which is exactly why it is quiet. Fish farms, paddy, and a direct road out of the city.

North east, Taki and Gobardanga. The Ichamati, the border, and the zamindar houses at Taki.

The ten minute booking conversation

Before you commit, settle these. We ask them on your behalf for every booking, and you can ask them yourself anywhere else.

  1. Is the pool open on our dates, and is it included
  2. Is there a generator, and does it run the air conditioners
  3. What are the meal times, what is on the menu, and is food included
  4. Can we bring alcohol, and is there a charge
  5. Check in and check out times
  6. Is the property fenced, and is anybody else staying that night
  7. What is the extra charge for a mattress or an additional guest
  8. Is the driver’s food and stay included
  9. How far is the parking from the room
  10. Who is on site overnight, and what is their number

Any property that answers all ten clearly is a property that will look after you. Hesitation on half of them tells you something too.

What to pack

Less than for a holiday, and these specific things.

Mosquito repellent between June and October, and a plug-in if you are near water. A torch, because the power will go at some point. Swimwear if the property has a pool, and a towel of your own, because village property towels are thin. Sunscreen for a riverside lawn, where the light bounces. A power bank. Cash, since several places cannot take cards and the ATM can be twenty minutes away. Basic medicines, because the nearest chemist is not close. Something warm for December and January evenings outdoors, which are colder than the city. Board games or cards, which are worth more than any facility on a long evening with no television. And for a group, a speaker, with the understanding that it goes off at ten.

Questions people ask

What is the best staycation near Kolkata? For the shortest drive with real facilities, Ramnagar River View Retreat or Lingdum Forest Retreat. For a group taking the whole place, Ghatakpukur Villa at 34 km with its own pool. For a couple who do not want to drive at all, Farm House Villa at Ruby Crossing at 12 km.

Is there a staycation in Kolkata itself? Yes. Bantala Farm House is inside city limits, Newtown Resort is about 9 km from the eastern edge, and Golui at Bally is 14 km with the Ganga outside the window.

Which staycations near Kolkata have a swimming pool? Nineteen of the forty. The closest with a pool are Ramnagar at 14 km, Lingdum at about 16 km, Easy Escape at 20 km and The Breathing Earth at 29 km. For a private pool rather than a shared one, Ghatakpukur Villa and Private Pool Villa at Laxmanpur.

Can we book the whole property? Yes, at thirteen of them. That is usually the right answer above about eight people, because it costs less per head than separate rooms and nobody has to negotiate about the common space.

How far should we go for one night? Inside 60 km. Beyond that, a single night means more time in the car than by the pool. Two hours out is a two night trip.

When should we leave Kolkata on a Friday? Before four, or after half past eight. Between five and seven you will spend ninety minutes getting out of the city whichever direction you pick.

Can we do it as a day trip instead? Many of these take day guests, usually nine to six with meals included. For a family of four it is a fraction of the cost of a night. The day outing guide has the detail.

Is the monsoon a bad time? No, it is underrated. Green, cheaper, dramatic, and the right weather for sitting under a roof eating khichuri. Carry repellent and have a plan that does not depend on the pool.

Do these places allow parties and loud music? Some do, some do not, and almost all have a time limit. Tell us what you are planning and we will only suggest the ones that permit it, because the alternative is being asked to turn the music off at ten with twenty guests standing there.

Is wifi good enough to work? At some. Seventeen list wifi, and in a village property that can mean anything from proper broadband to one mobile hotspot. If you have a call you cannot miss, tell us and we will check with the property first.

What does it cost? It depends on the property, the day of the week, the season and whether you take rooms or the whole place, and weekend rates near Kolkata are not the same as weekday ones. Send us your dates and we will come back with today’s price for the ones that fit.

How to make it easy

Tell us three things: when, how many of you, and what the weekend is for. A couple escaping the flat, a family with two small children, ten colleagues on an offsite and a group planning a birthday all want different properties, and the right one is usually not the one with the best photographs.

We will come back with two or three options rather than forty, say honestly how long the drive will take at the hour you plan to leave, and confirm the things that actually decide the weekend: pool open, generator on, meals arranged, checkout time.

If you are looking for something more exclusive, see our guide to private pool villas near Kolkata.

Not sure which one fits?

Tell us roughly when you are going and how many of you. We will send two or three specific options with real prices, and say what is wrong with each.
