Outdoor Activity

Boating and Dolphin-watching :  Chilka Lake is the largest habitat of the Irrawaddy Dolphins. Boating during the morning or afternoon hours is a great time to see them playing along with the wave. The vast waterbody merging with the sea is a sight to behold here.

Birding :  Huge swarms of migratory bird species visit the waterbodies in here every year, and there are a number of resident birds too. Lapwing, Gull, Pintail, Ruddy Shelduck, Oriental Pranticole, Painted Snipes, and a huge variety of raptors are seen here throughout the year, especially around winter.

Stargazing :  The clear sky over the lake is perfect for stargazing, as it is away from the major cities.

Beach Activity:  The beach is not full of the crowd often. Therefore, it is a perfect place who want to enjoy an undisturbed beach holiday with sun and sands, without the party hullabaloos.

Nearby Attractions

Satapada: Located in the eastern side of the lake, bound by the lake on three sides, this place offers an excellent view of the lagoon. This place is 50 km. away from Puri. The major attractions of this place are the interpretation center and eco-park. Boats start from here to see the Irrawaddy Dolphins in the lake itself.

Manikpatna :  As per historical evidence, there was a port in here, which was used for trade with Far-East Asia. BhabaKundaleswar temple and one old mosque are located here.

Kalijai Temple :  On Kalijai Island, there is a temple of Devi Kalijai, who is highly revered by the local people. A huge fair is held every year during Makar Sankranti in here.

Rambhartia :  This place lies about one and half hour boat journey from Satapada. Here, the sea mouth along with the Casuarina plantation on the sand-bar attract the nature lovers to this place. The long beach along the sandbar separates the lake from the sea. It is a popular picnic spot in winter.

Best Time To Visit

Undoubtedly, the best time to visit Chilka Lake is the winter months of November to February. Usually, in these months, the variety of migratory birds flock to this place. This is a great time to watch the dolphins too. Rainy season should be avoided as then there is the problem of boat movement, and the water becomes muddy, barring the wildlife watch.
