Almost all of us dream of doing a foreign trip sometime and some of us have already done it. Just because we want it to be perfect, does not mean it is free from mistakes in reality. A major mistake we commit while planning a foreign trip is, we often overlook the gems that are closer to home, despite being situated in a foreign country. With all due respect to Switzerland, trust us when we say that Bhutan has some exquisite mountainous beauties in its bag. While we know it by the name Bhutan, the locals call it the Druk Yul. The word literally translates to “The land of the thunder dragon”. Home to many breathtaking landscapes, Bhutan. The adventurous Bhutan Tour is easily one of the best options if you want to experience the rich local culture and magnificent nature.

Bhutan is also one of the very few monarchies in the world, which makes the place even more interesting. Bhutan was a haven of Buddhism along with Tibet and currently Vajrayana Buddhism is the state religion of Bhutan. Apart from its rich cultural heritage, it is also a paradise for wildlife. It is home to Golden Langur, Takin, and many other endangered species. Along with wildlife, it is also rich in culture.

Here are some of the best places to visit while you’re in Bhutan Tour:

Thimphu:

It would be a shame if we did NOT start with the capital. Thimphu, as all of you already know, is the capital of Bhutan. However, just because it is a capital city, don’t assume it will be crowded, polluted, and messy. Thimphu is a beautiful hilltown, encircled with vibrant greenery and the sight of the beautiful Chu River, although many of us know this river by the name Raidak. It is the ultimate haven of Bhutanese heritage, culture, and lifestyle. Thimphu is home to many famous tourist spots such as Tango Monastery, Cheri Monastery, Motithang Takin Preserve, Dechencholing Palace, and many more historical and natural tourist attractions. If you want to taste the unique blend of heritage and modernity, you’ll find plenty of happening nightclubs, bars, and cafes here.

Punakha:

Oh! Where do I even begin to describe Punakha? Looking for peace? Visit Punakha Dzong, a fortress made in the 17th century. Want to soothe your eyes? taste the beauty of the Pho and Mo Chu Rivers. Want an adrenalin rush? Go white water rafting on those two rivers!! Whatever your soul is craving, Punakha has it!

Jigme Dorji National Park:

This large national park covers more than 3 districts of Bhutan and is one of the most popular wildlife destinations in Asia. It is extremely biodiverse as it is home to Snow leopards, Bengal Tigers, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Himalayan Black bears, Black Musk Deer, and also a number of avian species. It is the only place where you can see the national flower (Blue Poppy), The national animal (Takin), The national tree (Cypress), and the national bird (Raven) of Bhutan in one place!

Chomolhari:

When you chose Bhutan as your next destination, we already knew you are a mountain lover! Coming to Bhutan and not experiencing the best mountain views ever, sounds empty. Chomolhari will come to your rescue. It is only 50 km from Paro International Airport and has some breathtaking views of the mountain. The place is interestingly called Bride of Kanchenjunga as it lies very close to the latter. Buddhists believe it to be sacred as the home of Goddess Jomo, the protector of Bhutan.

Although there are so many places we don’t have the space to mention, we will never forget to mention the Tiger’s Nest in Paro.

Tiger’s nest:

Almost all of us have heard about it at least once. The rest of us have certainly seen this place in our phones or laptops as wallpapers. It is also known as the Takhsang Monastery and is considered to be one of the most sacred places in Bhutan. It was built in the 17th century when Buddhist Guru Rinpoche first meditated in this place. According to local legend, Guru Rinpoche was very tired and was carried to this place by a tiger who was his disciple who transformed into a tiger. The name Tiger’s Nest is derived from this legend. After you trek to almost 3200 meters above sea level, you are presented with the most magnificent views, beautiful nature, and a tranquil environment. The place will take away the tiredness, the exhaustion and leave you rejuvenated.

We know, there is a flood of questions in your mind now. Before you become too confused, let’s take care of your worries one by one.

How hard is it to hike to Tiger’s Nest?

It is a moderate hike, which means almost all fit tourists can hike to Tiger’s Nest if they give a little effort. It has steep ascends, but it is achievable for most.

How long does it take to hike to Tiger’s Nest?

It takes around 3 hours to climb up and another 3 hours to come down. The entire hike (round trip) is almost 6.5km. There is a cafeteria halfway, where you can take a rest, have a meal, and spend some time.

Is it necessary to hike all the way if I want to visit Tiger’s Nest?

You can take a horse up to the cafeteria, which is halfway. From the cafeteria to the temple, you have to walk.

What should I bring for the hike?

Don’t forget to bring a water bottle, pain relieving spray/gel, and sunglasses. You’ll need a walking stick, which is available in shops at the starting point of the hike. Mosquito-repellant lotions are also a good thing to carry. DO carry some first-aid tools. Include some protein bars, ORS, and most importantly- Your camera!

What should I wear?

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen. You’ll need proper hiking shoes for better grip. Also, wear full sleeve hiking clothes as you can’t enter the monastery if your legs and arm are not covered.

What are the timings of the Tiger’s Nest?

From October to March, it is open from 8 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM. From April to September, it is open for another hour in the evening.

What is the best time to visit The Tiger’s Nest?

The best time to visit this place will be the Spring ( March to May) and also Autumn (September to November). Avoid the monsoon as it becomes extremely harder to trek at that time. From December to February, you’ll have clear views but these are the coldest months and snowfall can happen which can lead to difficulties.

Where can I get the permit?

You need a permit to enter Paro. If you are from India, you can get it from the Phuentsholing border. Indian Voter card is accepted for the permit. If you are from abroad, you need to pay the tourist fee to enter and stay in Bhutan.
