Jungle Trek : For the interested eco-tourists, there is the option of trekking with guides around the forest road from Dhodrokusum to Chourasimal. Travellers can see a variety of wild animals, as well as enjoy the beauty of the landscape.

Boating : In Hirakud Dam and reservoir, boating can be arranged if the weather is good.

Wildlife and Bird-Watching : Major fauna in this forest area are Leopard, Elephant, Sambar, Chital and Gaur etc. as well as aquatic wildlife too. Moreover, during the winter season, migratory birds visit the lake in large swarms.

Stargazing : The clear sky over the dam and lake is perfect for stargazing, due to the absence of any external light source.

Hirakud Dam : Built across river Mahanadi, Hirakud Dam is the longest earthen dam in the world. It is 25 Km long including 20 Km of Dyke and lies across the river Mahanadi spanning between two hills.

Zero Point : Close to the Debrigarh Nature Camp towards Jawahar Minar, is Zero Point. Tourists have to move along the twisted road to reach this place, from where they can see the vast Hirakud Reservoir on one side the Hirakud Dam and Debrigarh Sanctuary on the other side of the horizon from the Dyke itself.

Hirakud Reservoir : Hirakud Reservoir is the biggest artificial lake in India which is spread over 743 square km. The reservoir can be extensively viewed from Gandhi Minar & Nehru Minar. The other important local sightseeing places are the Power House, Nehru Park of Hirakud Dam, Ghanteswari Temple and Chiplima Hydroelectric Project at Chiplima etc.

Leaning Temple of Huma (Sambalpur) : The Leaning Temple of Huma in India is a major piece of architectural marvel and a religious place. Dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Huma, a village situated on the bank of the Mahanadi, 23 km south of Sambalpur in Odisha. While the edifice leans, the pinnacle of the temple is perpendicular to the ground.

Samaleswari Temple, Sambalpur : A Hindu temple in Sambalpur, dedicated to the goddess known as Samaleimaa, who is worshipped from the ancient times here. This temple architecture is an example of Sandhara order. It draws a huge devotee crowd throughout the year.

How to Reach

Rail : The nearest rail-station is Sambalpur. From there it is nearly 40 km away which takes 1 hour to reach by car.

Air : The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar (Biju Patnaik International Airport), 279km away and takes a car 6 hours and 30 minutes to reach the place.

Road : From Kolkata, the property is approximately 565 km away and it takes around 11 hours to reach by car.

Best Time To Visit

The sanctuary remains open during the months of November to March. The months of December and January are considered to be the best time to visit and enjoy nature here. In this time the animals come out and sighting occurs. The Sanctuary remains closed from 15th June to 30th October, owing to monsoon season.
